I am going to make this simple.. When you are choosing keywords.. Be logical! If 30,000,000 people all fighting for the top position for the keyword "animal food" DO NOT TRY for this keyword..
A good example of a long tail keyword is. "special diet animal food 2010"
You will not get 30,000,000 views from this keyword.. however the competition is a lot less then the "animal food" keyword. Which in turn equals you get the traffic! Even if it is only 100 people a month! Imagine 50 long tail targeted keywords all bringing in 100 views a month! That is 5,000 views a month! And more then likely they have there pocket books out and ready to purchase what you have.
Would love some feedback or any additions to what I have said above.
